EU new car registrations edged down -0.1% YTD through August 2025, though battery-electric and hybrid-electric models continued to expand market share at the expense of petrol and diesel.

  • Battery-electric registrations reached 1.13M units YTD (+15.8% share vs 12.6% in 2024), with strong growth in Germany (+39.2%), Belgium (+14.4%), and the Netherlands (+5.1%), while France declined -2% despite a +29.3% YoY rise in August.

  • Hybrid-electric registrations climbed to 2.49M units YTD (+34.7% share), supported by gains in France (+30.5%), Spain (+29.3%), Germany (+10.1%), and Italy (+9.4%).

  • Plug-in hybrid registrations rose to 631,783 units (+8.8% share vs 6.9% in 2024), driven by Spain (+99.9%), Germany (+61.2%), and Italy (+62.6%), marking six straight months of strong growth.

  • August YoY registrations rose +30.2% for battery-electric, +14.1% for hybrid-electric, and +54.5% for plug-in hybrids, underscoring momentum in electrified vehicles.

  • Petrol registrations fell -19.7% YTD (28.1% share vs 34.9%), with steep drops in France (-33.5%), Germany (-25.2%), Italy (-17.6%), and Spain (-13.1%).

  • Diesel registrations declined -25.7% YTD to 9.4% share, including a -17.5% YoY drop in August, highlighting the ongoing structural decline of traditional fuels.
