Latest Updates

  • U.S. EV sales fell sharply in Q4 2025 to 234k units (-46% QoQ, -36% YoY) after incentives were revoked, reversing Q3’s record surge and pushing EV share lower.

    • EV sales dropped to 234,000 units in Q4, the weakest quarterly level since Q4 2022, following record-breaking Q3 2025 volume before incentive changes took effect in early October.

    • EV share of total new-vehicle sales fell to 5.8% in Q4 (from a peak 10.5% in Q3), returning to a level roughly consistent with the first half of 2022.

    • Despite the Q4 collapse, full-year 2025 EV sales were just shy of 2024’s ~1.30M, making 2025 the second-best year on record for EV unit sales.

    • EV share for all of 2025 came in at 7.8% (vs 8.1% in 2024), indicating a modest annual step-down in penetration despite strong mid-year momentum.

    • Tesla remained the dominant EV seller, with 2025 sales of 589k units (-7% YoY, -44k units), representing nearly half of all EVs sold in the U.S., led mainly by the Model 3 and Model Y.

    • General Motors expanded quickly, selling 150k+ EVs in 2025 (+48% YoY) and reaching roughly 13% of total U.S. EV sales, supported by new models under Chevrolet and Cadillac.

    • Cox Automotive expects EV share to be near 8% in 2026, citing improving charging reliability and a wider model lineup, including new entries like the 2026 Chevrolet Bolt, Rivian R2, and new BMW EVs (including the iX3 SUV).

    • The outlook flagged government policy as a “wildcard,” with less regulatory pressure potentially shifting the pace of adoption toward automaker strategy and consumer demand rather than mandates.
