Drewry Port Throughput Index

Drewry’s Global Container Port Throughput Index fell 2.1% MoM in December, but was up 5.7% on an annual basis. Growth continues to be driven by the Middle East and South Asia region (+9.2% YoY), Africa (+6.9% YoY) and Latin America (+6.5% YoY).

  • The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index fell 5.3% MoM in December, although it was up 6.0% YoY. Although most of major ports in Greater China saw volumes fall MoM in December, all but Hong Kong remain ahead of last year. Ningbo, in particular, has had a very strong end to the year, with 4Q25 throughput up 16.6% YoY. Shanghai and Guangzhou also experienced strong demand, with 4Q25 volumes up 9.0% and 9.3% YoY, respectively. 
  • The North American Container Port Throughput Index fell 3.1% MoM in December to 107.3 points, closing the year 3.4% below December 2024 levels. Volumes at Los Angeles and Long Beach were weak in 4Q25, falling 10.6% and 8.8% YoY, respectively. Mexican port volumes recovered slightly in December, with Manzanillo up 6.8% MoM and Lazaro Cardenas up 1.4% MoM. For 4Q25, Manzanillo was flat YoY while volumes at Lazaro Cardenas rose 3.4% YoY. 
  • The European Container Port Throughput Index fell 6.2% MoM in December, but was up by a healthy 7.8% YoY. In the East Mediterranean, volumes at Port Said East in December rose 1.7% MoM and 47% YoY. Alexandria also performed well-throughput was up 10% MoM and 24% YoY. Meanwhile, traffic at Piraeus jumped 10% MoM, but this was insufficient to offset the 10% YoY reduction. The weakness at Spain’s major ports continued into December with volumes at Valencia, Algeciras and Barcelona falling 11.3%, 23.6% and 5.7% MoM, respectively.
