Canada’s retail sales fell -0.8% MoM (vs -0.8% MoM expected) to $69.6 billion in July 2025, with declines seen in most subsectors and volumes also down -0.8% MoM.

  • Core retail sales (ex-gas and autos) dropped -1.2% MoM, led by food and beverage retailers (-1.3%), with supermarkets and grocery stores down -2.5% after a strong June.

  • Beer, wine, and liquor stores were the only category in this subsector to rise, posting +3.2% MoM growth.

  • Clothing and accessories sales fell -2.9% MoM, driven by a -3.2% decline at clothing and clothing accessories stores.

  • Motor vehicle and parts dealers edged up +0.2% MoM, supported by other motor vehicle dealers (+5.0%) and new car dealers (+0.1%), partly offset by declines in used car (-0.9%) and parts/tire retailers (-0.7%).

  • Gasoline station sales declined -0.9% MoM in value terms, though volumes rose +0.2% MoM.

  • Ontario sales dropped -1.6% MoM, the largest fall in dollar terms, while Newfoundland and Labrador saw a sharp -8.8% MoM drop linked to wildfire disruptions; Quebec edged up +0.2% MoM, with Montréal +0.7%.

  • Retail e-commerce sales rose +2.2% MoM to $4.3 billion, accounting for 6.1% of total retail trade.

  • An advance estimate suggests retail sales rebounded +1.0% MoM in August, though results are subject to revision.
