The Drewry World Container Index rose 41% WoW to $3,527 for the week ending June 5, 2025, the highest level in over a year amid surging trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe rates.

  • Shanghai–Los Angeles jumped 57% WoW to $5,876, now down -8% YoY.
  • Shanghai–New York rose 39% WoW to $7,164, down just -1% YoY.
  • Shanghai–Rotterdam climbed 32% WoW to $2,845 but remains down -53% YoY.
  • Shanghai–Genoa increased 38% WoW to $4,088, still -39% YoY.
  • The backhaul Rotterdam–Shanghai route gained 10% WoW to $509, down -21% YoY, while New York–Rotterdam slipped -1% WoW.
  • Drewry expects the supply-demand balance to weaken again in the second half, which will cause spot rates to decline again in the second half of this year. The volatility and timing of rate changes will depend on the outcome of legal challenges to Trump’s tariffs and on capacity changes related to the introduction of the US penalties on Chinese ships, which are uncertain.
