UK production output fell -1.3% in the three months to July 2025, the weakest performance since December 2023, reflecting broad-based declines across manufacturing, energy, and mining.
- On a monthly basis, production output fell -0.9% in July, reversing June’s +0.7% increase and extending May’s -1.3% decline.
- Manufacturing dropped -1.1% over the three-month period, the first quarterly decline since January 2025, with 9 of 13 subsectors contributing to the fall.
- Electricity & gas output fell -5.1% and mining & quarrying declined -1.8%, both weighing on overall production.
- Water supply & sewerage provided a partial offset, rising +1.6% in the three months to July.
- July’s monthly drop was driven by manufacturing (-1.3%) and mining (-2.0%), while electricity & gas (+2.0%) and water supply (+0.8%) provided some support.
- Within manufacturing, computer, electronic & optical products fell -7.0% MoM, pharmaceuticals declined -4.5%, and chemicals dropped -4.6%, leading the sectoral weakness.

UK production output rose +0.7% MoM in June 2025, after falling -1.3% in May and posting no growth in April. Output fell -0.3% QoQ in Q2 2025.
- Manufacturing rose +0.5% MoM, with 8 of 13 subsectors up; computer, electronic & optical products jumped +8.8% and was the largest contributor.
- Electricity & gas output increased +3.3% MoM but fell -6.8% QoQ, the main drag on quarterly growth.
- Water supply & sewerage rose +0.5% MoM and +2.1% QoQ.
- Mining & quarrying fell -0.4% MoM and -0.3% QoQ.

UK production output fell -0.9% MoM in May 2025, marking the third consecutive monthly decline following drops of -0.6% in April and -0.2% in March. Output rose +0.2% QoQ in the three months to May.
- Manufacturing output declined -1.0% MoM, with 9 of 13 subsectors down; pharmaceuticals (-4.2%), transport equipment (-1.3%), and basic metals (-1.8%) were key drags.
- Mining & quarrying fell -3.2% MoM, while water supply & sewerage rose +0.8% and electricity & gas increased +0.3%.
- QoQ, manufacturing rose +0.4%, while water supply & sewerage contributed strongly with a +3.7% gain.
- Declines in electricity & gas (-2.8%) and mining & quarrying (-1.6%) offset some of the quarterly gains.

UK production output fell -0.6% MoM in April 2025, following a -0.7% MoM drop in March and a +1.7% gain in February. However, output rose 1.1% QoQ in the three months to April, driven by strength in manufacturing.
- Manufacturing output declined -0.9% MoM in April, with 8 of 13 subsectors falling; transport equipment was the largest drag, down -5.2% after rising 5.0% in March.
- Electricity & gas output dropped -4.3% MoM, while mining & quarrying rose +3.6% and water supply increased +0.7%.
- Manufacturing output rose 1.2% QoQ, with 11 of 13 subsectors posting gains, led by transport equipment (+3.6%), machinery & equipment n.e.c. (+3.2%), and textiles (+5.5%).
- Quarterly gains were also supported by water supply & sewerage (+3.7%) and electricity & gas (+1.0%), offsetting a -1.3% decline in mining & quarrying.

UK production output fell -0.7% MoM (vs -0.5% MoM expected) in March 2025, following a 1.7% MoM gain in February and a -0.4% MoM decline in January. Quarterly production rose 1.1% QoQ in Q1 2025, the first increase since Q1 2024.
- Manufacturing output fell -0.8% MoM in March but rose 0.8% QoQ in Q1, with 10 of 13 subsectors growing over the quarter.
- Key drivers of quarterly growth were transport equipment (+2.7%) and machinery & equipment n.e.c. (+3.8%).
- March’s monthly decline was driven by steep drops in computer, electronic & optical products (-8.4%) and pharmaceuticals (-5.8%), both of which had surged in February.
- Mining and quarrying fell -1.2% MoM in March and -0.5% QoQ in Q1.
- Electricity & gas output declined -0.7% MoM but rose 1.8% QoQ; water supply rose 0.8% MoM and 4.0% QoQ.

UK production output increased 1.5% MoM in February, rebounding from a -0.5% MoM decline in January (revised up from -0.9% MoM) and topping expectations of no growth.
- Output rose 0.7% in the three months to February vs. the prior three months, led by manufacturing (+0.6%) and utilities, while mining fell -0.7%.
- Manufacturing rose 2.2% MoM (vs 0.2% MoM expected), with gains in 10 of 13 subsectors; key drivers were computer, electronic & optical products (+9.8%), pharmaceuticals (+4.4%), and transport equipment (+1.8%).
- Electricity & gas output rose 2.0% MoM, and water supply & sewerage increased 1.1% MoM.
- Mining and quarrying fell -3.0% MoM, the only major sector to decline.

Industrial production also surprised to the downside, falling -0.9% MoM in January when a smaller -0.1% MoM decline was expected.
- Notably, production output was at its lowest level since May 2020.
- This came from a sharp -1.1% MoM decline in manufacturing production (analysts expected no change) that was the weakest since July 2024.
- Weakness in manufacturing was only partially offset by water & sewerage output up 2.6% MoM and electricity & gas up 0.5% MoM.
- Mining and quarrying also contributed negatively with a -3.3% fall on the month, largely because of a 3.7% MoM fall in extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas.
- The GDP decline was a result of weakness in the production sector with that component contributing -11 bps of growth to overall growth, the largest negative contribution since April 2024

Industrial production grew 0.5% MoM in December, beating expectations of 0.2% MoM growth, but fell -0.8% QoQ in Q4 2024. On an annual basis, production was down -1.9%.
- In Q4 2024, “manufacturing” (-0.7% QoQ) was the main contributor to the fall, supported by smaller negative contributions from “mining and quarrying” (-2.5% QoQ), and “electricity and gas” (-0.7% QoQ); this was partially offset by an increase in “water supply and sewerage” (+1.2% QoQ).
- The monthly increase in manufacturing output saw increases in 7 of its 13 subsectors. The largest positive contributions to manufacturing output in December 2024 came from, “basic pharmaceutical products” (+5.1% MoM), “machinery and equipment” (+5.9% MoM) and “other manufacturing and repair” (+2.3% MoM).

Industrial production disappointed in November, falling -0.4% MoM when an 0.1% MoM increase was expected. Similarly, manufacturing production fell -0.3% MoM vs expectations of no growth. In the three months to November, production is down -0.7%. Notably, ONS reports that monthly production output in November was at its lowest level since May 2020. The largest negative contributions came from other manufacturing and repair (-2.1% MoM), basic pharmaceutical products (-1.9% MoM) and transport equipment (-0.9% MoM).

UK industrial production continued its volatile trend in October, down -0.6% MoM after an 0.5% MoM increase in October and a -0.5% MoM decline in September. Monthly production output in October 2024 was at its lowest level since May 2020. Manufacturing production down -0.6% MoM was further weighed down by a -3.1% MoM decline in mining and quarrying. Both were offset by a 1.4% MoM rise in electricity and gas and a 0.5% MoM rise in water supply & sewerage.
