  • The median reported year-over-year increase in monthly nominal household spending increased to 4.9 percent in December from 4.1 percent in August and 4.6 percent in December 2024.

    • The shares of households that reported making a large purchase on furniture, home repairs, vehicles, and vacations decreased in December, while shares reporting spending on homes, home appliances, and electronics increased.
    • Median expected monthly overall spending growth over the next twelve months increased to 3.4 percent in December from 3.0 percent in August.
    • Median year-ahead expected spending growth on transportation and recreation decreased slightly to 4.1 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively, while it increased for food to 5.4 percent, for clothing to 2.8 percent, and for housing and medical care to 4.1 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively, both series highs. Median expected spending growth for utilities remained essentially unchanged at 4.6 percent.
