France’s trade sales volume rose +0.5% MoM in June 2025 (after -0.5% in May), with gains in wholesale and motor vehicle-related trades while retail trade remained flat.
- Wholesale trade (ex-motor vehicles) increased +0.8% MoM (prev -0.6%), driven by “other specialised wholesale” (+3.3%) and a sharp rebound in metals and metal ores (+16.3%).
- Wholesale & retail trade and repair of motor vehicles/motorcycles rose +0.4% MoM (prev -1.3%), led by motor vehicle parts (+0.8%), though motorcycle sales/repairs fell -2.8%.
- Retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) was unchanged MoM, as specialised stores (-0.5%) declined, offset by rebounds in non-specialised stores (+0.5%) and non-store retail (+1.1%).
- Within retail, sales fell in “other goods in specialised stores” (-1.1%) but rose for automotive fuel (+1.5%).
- In Q2 2025, total trade volumes rose +0.8% YoY, with retail up +3.4% and wholesale +0.4%, while motor vehicle trade fell -2.9%.
- Early estimates suggest July retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) will remain stable MoM, but sales for May–July were +3.4% YoY.

France’s trade sales volume fell -0.5% MoM in May 2025 after a +0.6% MoM increase in April, as wholesale and motor vehicle-related trades declined while retail sales held flat.
- Wholesale trade (ex-motor vehicles) declined -0.6% MoM, led by “other specialised wholesale” (‑2.4%) and food/beverages (‑0.7%).
- Sales of motor vehicles and motorcycles dropped -1.2% MoM, with all subcategories posting declines (e.g., motor vehicles ‑1.2%, parts ‑1.2%, motorcycles ‑1.9%).
- Retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) was unchanged MoM, as a decline in non-specialised stores (‑0.4%) was offset by gains in specialised (+0.1%) and non-store retail (+0.4%).
- From Mar–May 2025, retail trade volume rose +0.3% YoY, driven by non-motor vehicle retail (+2.8% YoY), while motor vehicle trade fell -3.3% YoY and wholesale -0.2% YoY.
- Early estimates for June 2025 suggest retail sales (ex-motor vehicles) fell -1.0% MoM, but are still up +2.8% YoY in Q2.

France’s trade sales volume rose 0.7% MoM in April 2025 (after 0.5% MoM in March), led by wholesale and retail gains. However, trade volume fell -0.5% YoY in the February–April period.
- Wholesale trade (ex-motor vehicles) increased 0.9% MoM, with notable rebounds in food/beverages/tobacco (1.5% MoM) and agricultural raw materials (3.3% MoM); “other machinery & equipment” fell -0.6% MoM.
- Retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) rose 0.6% MoM, supported by both specialised stores (0.6% MoM) and non-specialised stores (0.6% MoM).
- Sales in motor vehicles and motorcycles were flat (0.1% MoM), with motor vehicle sales down -0.3% MoM and motor vehicle parts up 0.6% MoM.
- On a quarterly basis, retail trade was up 0.6%, while motor vehicles trade fell -0.9% and wholesale rose 0.7%.
- Preliminary data shows May retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) declined -0.2% MoM but was up 2.7% YoY over the Mar–May period.

France’s overall trade sales volume rose 0.4% MoM in March after falling -0.1% MoM in February, with gains across all major trade sectors. On an annual basis, sales were down -0.8% YoY.
- Retail trade (ex-motor vehicles) increased 0.3% MoM, driven by a 0.5% rebound in specialised store sales and a 3.4% jump in information & communication equipment.
- Wholesale trade (ex-motor vehicles) rose 0.5% MoM, led by agricultural raw materials (+5.9%) and other machinery & equipment (+1.7%), while ICT wholesale fell -3.0%.
- Sales in motor vehicles and motorcycles rose 0.2% MoM, with motor vehicle sales up 0.6% after a prior -0.3% decline.
- YoY, overall trade volume declined -0.8% in Q1 2025, with sharp falls in motor vehicles (-4.5%) and moderate drops in wholesale (-1.2%), offset by a 2.0% rise in retail trade.
- Early estimates suggest April retail sales (ex-motor vehicles) rose 0.3% MoM and were up 1.8% YoY for the Feb–Apr period.

- Sales dropped in food stores (-0.1% MoM), recreational goods stores (-0.3% MoM), and other household equipment (-0.8% MoM).
- Wholesale sales fell -0.1% MoM and -1.4% YoY in February, dragged down by weak wholesale food and household goods sales.
- The early estimate of March retail sales is a decline of -0.1% MoM.
