France’s household goods consumption fell -1.0% MoM in March, the sharpest drop since December 2022 and the lowest level since 2014 (excluding COVID), with broad-based weakness across categories.
- Durable goods spending declined -1.9% MoM, driven by a -3.0% MoM plunge in transport equipment following tighter ecological penalties; household equipment also dropped -1.0%.
- Energy consumption fell -1.8% MoM, as both refined product purchases (-2.2%) and other energy use (-1.6%) declined amid mild weather and lower demand.
- Food consumption contracted -0.5% MoM for the second straight month and was down -3.2% YoY; Q1 food spending dropped -0.8% QoQ.
- Textile and clothing expenditures edged down -0.3% MoM, while “other engineered goods” rebounded slightly at +0.1% MoM.

France’s household consumption expenditures on goods decreased -0.1% MoM (vs 0.3% MoM expected) in February after falling -0.6% MoM in January, driven by a -0.7% MoM drop in food consumption.
- Food consumption declined -0.7% MoM, following +1.0% in January, and was -1.8% lower YoY. Tobacco consumption continued to fall.
- Energy consumption rose +0.2% MoM, led by a +1.0% increase in refined products, though electricity spending dropped -0.4%.
- Engineered goods consumption rebounded +0.2% MoM, including a +0.4% increase in durable goods and +0.5% in textiles and clothing.
- Durable goods saw a limited recovery, with transport equipment purchases up +0.9% after a sharp drop the previous month.
- Spending on “other manufactured goods” fell -0.2% MoM, driven by reduced purchases of medical goods.

France household goods consumption fell -0.5% MoM in January, slightly better than -0.7% MoM expected and the largest drop since June 2024.
- Food consumption increased 1.4% MoM, and energy consumption improved 0.2% MoM.
- Both were offset by a -2.4% MoM drop in manufactured goods spending including a -3.9% MoM drop in durables spending and a -1.7% MoM drop in clothing spending.

Household goods consumption in France increased 0.7% MoM and 0.9% YoY in December, above expectations of a smaller 0.2% MoM increase. The increase in goods consumption was a result of a 2.5% MoM increase in energy goods spending and a 1.9% MoM increase in manufactured goods spending. Food spending fell -1.5% MoM. The growth in transport equipment, in particular new cars and motorcycles, (+3.4% MoM) and household durables (+3.8% MoM) were especially strong. In Q4 2024 as a whole, household consumption of goods kept increasing 0.4% QoQ, after growth of 0.4% QoQ in Q3 2024.

French household goods consumption increased 0.3% MoM (vs 0.2% MoM expected) and was up 0.3% YoY. Food and engineered goods consumption were both up 0.3% MoM and 0.9% MoM respectively, while energy consumption fell -0.8% MoM. There was a large increase in durable goods spending, up 1.9% MoM, as spending on new and used vehicles jumped 4.0% MoM.
