Real household spending in Japan fell -5.2% MoM (vs -3.0% MoM expected) in June, after a 4.6% MoM increase in May. On an annual basis, spending was up 1.3% YoY (vs 2.6% YoY expected), down from 4.7% YoY previously.
- Real income growth was -1.7% YoY in June, down from an increase of 0.4% YoY of May. Real disposable income growth was down -8.1% YoY, the largest decline in over two years.
- Spending growth in both goods and services cooled, down 6.5% YoY to 1.6% YoY and down 4.6% YoY to 2.3% YoY, respectively.
- Durable goods spending was up 22.0% YoY while semi-durable and non-durable goods spending were down -4.1% YoY and -0.7% YoY, respectively.
Real household spending in Japan jumped 4.6% MoM (vs 0.4% MoM expected) and is now up 4.7% YoY in May, up from -0.1% YoY in April and the largest annual gain since August 2022.
- Real income growth was still weak at just 0.4% YoY, but it was the highest since December 2024. Real disposable income growth saw a healthier gain of 2.6% YoY, up from 0.9% YoY previously.
- Spending on both goods and services was strong in May, up 6.5% YoY and 4.6% YoY, respectively. Goods spending growth was the strongest in over three years.
- Transportation & communications spending surged 25.3% YoY, leading to durable goods spending being up 63.1% YoY.
Real household spending in Japan dropped -1.8% MoM (vs -0.8% MoM expected) and was down -0.1% YoY (vs 1.4% YoY expected) in April.
- Real income was flat in April, the first non-negative YoY change since December 2024. Real disposable income was up 0.9% YoY, the first expansion in 2025.
- After being up 6.1% YoY in March, real services spending was down -0.8% YoY in April, the worst since October 2024.
- Real goods spending bounced back to an increased of 2.5% YoY in April, the strongest in around two years.
- Spending on durable goods surged 21.5% YoY with semi-durable goods spending up 3.6% YoY.
Real household spending in Japan increased 0.4% MoM (vs -0.5% MoM expected) and was up 2.1% YoY (vs 0.2% YoY expected) in March. This is the largest annual increase so far this year.
- Real income saw a decline in March of -2.0% YoY, slightly better than the month before. The -2.5% YoY decline in disposable income was the weakest since April 2024.
- Real services spending was up 6.1% YoY, bouncing from the 1.0% YoY increase in February.
- Real goods spending fell -0.5% YoY, the smallest decline so far this year.
- Spending on durable goods (-5.4% YoY) and semi-durable goods (-2.3% YoY) was down, partially offset by an increase in non-durable goods spending (+1.0% YoY).
Real household spending in Japan increased 3.5% MoM (vs 0.5% MoM expected) but was down -0.5% YoY (vs -1.7% YoY expected) in February. This is the largest monthly increase since March 2022.
- Real income saw a sharper decline in February at -2.3% YoY, the lowest since February 2024.
- Real services spending was up just 1.0% YoY, falling from the 6.7% YoY increase in January.
- Real goods spending fell -1.5% YoY, an improvement over the -2.7% YoY decline previously.
- Spending on housing (-8.1% YoY), furniture (-8.7% YoY), and clothing (-12.5% YoY) was exceptionally weak.
After improving in December, real household spending fell -4.5% MoM (vs -1.9% MoM expected), and the annual growth rate eased to 0.8% YoY in January, down from 2.7% YoY and below expectations of an acceleration to 3.6% YoY.
- Real income flipped from moderate growth of 2.9% YoY in December to a decline of -1.1% YoY, the first drop since September 2024.
- A major divergence developed in goods and services spending with the former down -2.7% YoY and the latter surging to an increase of 6.7% YoY, the largest annual increase in real spending on services in over two years.
Japanese real household spending growth increased to the highest in over two years in December, up 2.3% MoM and 2.7% YoY compared to expectations of a -0.5% MoM drop in spending and an annual rate of just 0.2% YoY.
- Spending on both goods and services saw strong growth, up 1.8% YoY and 4.7% YoY respectively with real goods spending growth at the highest rate in more than two years.
- The increase in spending came with an increase in income as well. Real incomes were up 2.9% YoY (previously 0.7% YoY) and real disposable income was up 3.0% YoY (previously 1.2% YoY).
Japanese real household spending increased 0.4% MoM in November, a surprise increase over the expected decline of -0.9% MoM. The YoY decline in household spending, therefore, improved to -0.4% YoY from 1.3% YoY in October.

Real spending on goods declined -2.4% YoY while real services spending saw a significant acceleration to an increase of 2.2% YoY. The improvement in spending came on the back of a slight increase in real incomes of 0.7% YoY.
