The euro area unemployment rate came in below estimates at 6.2% in January, unchanged from December and better than the expectation of a 0.1 ppt increase to 6.3%.

- Total youth unemployment increased just 3k to 2.26 million, and the youth unemployment rate actually fell -0.1 ppts to 14.1%, the lowest since June 2023.

The euro area labor market cooled a bit to end 2024. The unemployment rate increased 0.1 ppts to 6.3% in December as unemployment increased by 94k. However, from a year ago the unemployment rate is down -0.2 ppts and total unemployed is down -261k. Though the headline jobless rate increased, youth unemployment actually ticked lower by -0.1 ppts to 14.8%.
