US total vehicle sales increased 1.7% MoM to a SAAR of 16.3 million in December but were down -5.6% YoY. Light vehicle sales saw a similar trend, up 1.9% MoM and down -4.9% YoY to a SAAR of 16.0 million.
- Total auto sales were up 9.6% MoM, driven by growth in domestic auto sales up 12.1% MoM. However, the December SAAR pace of 2.77 million was -7.4% below a year ago.
- Total light truck sales were mostly unchanged at 0.5% MoM, with domestic truck sales (+2.1% MoM) offsetting weakness in foreign truck sales (-6.2% MoM). The December SAAR pace of 13.25 million was down -4.3% YoY.

- Heavy truck sales continue to trend very poorly, down -7.6% MoM to a SAAR of 0.311 million, the weakest sales pace since May 2020 and the 2nd worst since July 2011. The annual decline is a steep -32.5% YoY.
