US total vehicle sales increased 1.7% MoM to a SAAR of 16.3 million in December but were down -5.6% YoY. Light vehicle sales saw a similar trend, up 1.9% MoM and down -4.9% YoY to a SAAR of 16.0 million.
- Total auto sales were up 9.6% MoM, driven by growth in domestic auto sales up 12.1% MoM. However, the December SAAR pace of 2.77 million was -7.4% below a year ago.
- Total light truck sales were mostly unchanged at 0.5% MoM, with domestic truck sales (+2.1% MoM) offsetting weakness in foreign truck sales (-6.2% MoM). The December SAAR pace of 13.25 million was down -4.3% YoY.
- Heavy truck sales continue to trend very poorly, down -7.6% MoM to a SAAR of 0.311 million, the weakest sales pace since May 2020 and the 2nd worst since July 2011. The annual decline is a steep -32.5% YoY.
Total light vehicle sales increased at a SAAR of 15.60 million in November, up 2.0% MoM but down -5.6% YoY.
- The annual decline was driven by a -18.1% YoY drop in auto sales to a SAAR of 2.49 million, cushioned by a smaller decline of -2.7% YoY in light truck sales to a SAAR of 13.10 million.
- Both domestic and foreign auto sales were weak on a YoY basis, down -17.4% YoY and -19.7% YoY, respectively. Neither saw much movement on a monthly basis.
- Domestic light truck sales only fell -1.9% YoY to a SAAR of 10.46 million, while foreign light truck sales were down -5.7% YoY to a SAAR of 2.64 million.
- Heavy truck sales were especially weak at -25.3% MoM, even though the November SAAR of 0.37 million was up 8.3% MoM.
US total vehicle sales fell -2.9% MoM in August 2025 to a SAAR of 16.49 million units, though sales were still up +5.5% YoY.
- Auto sales rose +2.1% MoM to 2.67 million SAAR, with domestic autos up +1.2% MoM and foreign autos up +3.8% MoM; however, total autos were down -7.6% YoY.
- Light truck sales declined -3.8% MoM to 13.40 millions SAAR, though they remained up +9.4% YoY; domestic light trucks fell -2.3% MoM while foreign light trucks dropped -9.4% MoM.
- Heavy truck sales decreased -4.4% MoM to 0.42 million SAAR, extending a sharp -15.7% YoY decline.
- Domestic light trucks showed strong YoY growth at +12.5%, offsetting weakness in autos, highlighting the ongoing consumer preference for trucks.
- Despite monthly weakness, overall light vehicle demand remained firm compared with last year, supporting a +5.5% YoY increase in total unit sales.
US total vehicle sales rose 7.0% MoM to a SAAR of 16.87 million units in July 2025, marking the strongest monthly pace since April. On a YoY basis, sales were up 3.2%.
- Light vehicle sales climbed 7.1% MoM and 3.7% YoY to 16.41 million SAAR, led by a 6.9% MoM gain in domestic light truck sales and a 12.3% MoM gain in foreign light truck sales.
- Auto sales rose 2.6% MoM but remain down -11.6% YoY, with domestic autos up 4.0% MoM and foreign autos flat on the month.
- Heavy truck sales were up 2.7% MoM but fell -11.9% YoY, continuing their longer-term decline.
US total light vehicle sales fell -1.7% MoM to an SAAR of 15.34 million in June, the lowest since August 2024. On an annual basis, sales were up 2.2% YoY, up from a -1.4% YoY decline in May.
- Total vehicle sales were down -1.7% MoM but still up 2.2% YoY at a SAAR of 15.78 million.
- Domestic auto sales were up 1.1% MoM but down -12.0% YoY at a SAAR of 1.69 million.
- Foreign auto sales saw a large -8.3% MoM drop as the tariff front running effect fell away. However, at a SAAR of 0.85 million, foreign sales are up 6.1% YoY.
- Both foreign and domestic light truck sales were down, -0.6% MoM and -1.8% MoM, respectively. Total light truck sales were down -1.6% MoM but still up 4.3% YoY.
- Heavy truck sales dropped -3.3% MoM and -1.5% YoY to the lowest SAAR since January 2022.
US total light vehicle sales were down -9.3% MoM and -1.1% YoY in May to a SAAR of 15.65 million, the weakest since January
- Similarly, US total vehicle sales were down -9.2% MoM and -1.3% YoY in May to a SAAR of 16.09 million units, also the weakest since January.
- Domestic auto sales fell sharply by -9.9% MoM and -19.9% YoY to 1.671 million units.
- Foreign auto sales were a relative bright spot due to tariff front running, rising 6.1% YoY despite an -11.4% MoM drop.
- Foreign light truck sales dropped -16.3% MoM, with a -3.2% YoY decline.
- Light truck sales overall decreased -9.1% MoM to 13.07 million units, but were up 1.4% YoY.
- Heavy truck sales were relatively flat MoM (-2.4%) but fell -7.8% YoY.
US light vehicle sales cooled -3.1% MoM to an SAAR of 17.27 million in April, but sales were still elevated compared to a year ago, up 7.8% YoY.
- The consensus was that sales would slow back down to a SAAR of 15.7 million, but the headline number surpassed that by a significant margin.
- March light vehicle sales was revised up from the 1st estimate of 17.77 million to 17.83 million, a 13.3% YoY increase (vs 12.6% YoY previously estimated).
- There was still strong evidence of consumers front-running tariffs as foreign auto sales growth was up 13.3% YoY even though the April pace fell from the March surge.
- Domestic auto purchases were down -13.1% YoY while domestic light truck purchases were up 11.1% YoY.
- Heavy truck sales growth bounced back, up 12.2% MoM and 0.9% YoY, the fastest pace since August 2024.
US light vehicle sales surged 11.0% MoM and 13.3% YoY to an SAAR of 17.77 million in March, well above the expected SAAR of 15.90 million and the weaker 16.0 million SAAR in February.
- This is the highest monthly increase since January 2023, and the largest annual increase since December 2023.
- The surge in auto sales is partly attributed to consumers looking to purchase vehicles ahead of the increase in auto import tariffs.
- Domestic auto sales increased 5.8% MoM and 1.5% YoY, and foreign auto sales increased 5.0% MoM and 14.0% YoY.
- Domestic light truck sales surged 12.6% MoM and 14.2% YoY, and foreign light truck sales were up 10.8% MoM and 19.0% YoY.
- Heavy truck sales were weak, on the other hand, down -7.6% MoM and -12.2% YoY.
Total light vehicle sales increased 3.2% MoM and 2.1% YoY in February to 15.999 million SAAR.
- January auto retail sales were revised down from the already weak totals. Total light vehicle sales were revised down to 15.498 million SAAR from 15.603 million SAAR, and overall vehicle sales were revised down to 15.988 million SAAR from 16.137 million SAAR.
- Domestic auto sales increased 10.3% MoM, offsetting a -5.3% MoM decline in foreign auto sales.
- Similarly, domestic light truck sales were up 4.8% MoM while foreign light truck sales were down -3.1% MoM.
- Heavy truck sales were down -6.2% MoM and -9.3% YoY.
Total US light vehicle sales had a weak showing in January, falling from an SAAR of 16.87 million in December, the highest since May 2021, to 15.60 million in January (-7.5% MoM and +3.8% YoY).
- Both domestic and foreign auto sales fell substantially, down -8.8% MoM and -8.9% MoM respectively.
- Domestic light truck sales were down -8.1% MoM, and foreign light truck sales fell -4.0 MoM
