EU new car registrations fell -0.7% YTD through July 2025 but rose +7.4% YoY in July, reflecting modest recovery amid structural shifts in fuel mix.
- Battery-electric cars reached 1.01M units YTD (+15.6% share, up from 12.5% in 2024), with strong gains in Germany (+38.4%), Belgium (+17.6%), and the Netherlands (+6.5%), while France declined -4.3%.
- Hybrid-electric registrations climbed to 2.26M units (+34.7% share), supported by growth in France (+30.5%), Spain (+30.2%), Germany (+10.7%), and Italy (+9.4%).
- Plug-in hybrid sales rose to 561,190 units (8.6% share vs 6.9% in 2024), with sharp increases in Spain (+94.5%), Germany (+59.2%), and Italy (+60.3%).
- July YoY gains were broad: battery-electric (+39.1%), hybrid-electric (+14.3%), and plug-in hybrids (+56.9%), marking the latter’s fifth straight month of strong growth.

EU new car registrations fell -1.9% YoY in H1 2025, including a steep -7.3% YoY drop in June, as weak demand weighed on the auto sector.
- Battery-electric vehicles captured 15.6% market share in H1 2025 (up from 12.5% in H1 2024), with unit sales up +35.1% in Germany and +19.5% in Belgium, but down -6.4% in France.
- Hybrid-electric car registrations rose to 1.94 million units (+34.1% in France, +32.8% Spain), holding a 34.8% market share.

EU new car registrations were up 1.6% YoY in May, slightly higher than 1.3% YoY growth in April. On a YTD basis, registrations are down -0.6% YoY.
- BEV sales rose 25% YoY in May and reached 701,089 units YTD (+43.2% in Germany, +26.7% in Belgium, +6.7% in the Netherlands; -7.1% in France).
- Hybrid-electric vehicles reached 1.6 million units YTD (+38.3% France, +34.9% Spain, +13.8% Italy, +12.1% Germany), holding a 35.1% market share.
- Plug-in hybrid registrations grew +46.9% YoY in May to 375,182 units YTD (8.2% share), with strong growth in Germany (+52.8%) and Spain (+66.6%).

EU new car registrations rose 1.3% YoY in April, but remained down -1.2% YoY for the year-to-date (YTD), with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) capturing a 15.3% YTD market share.
- BEV sales grew 26.4% YTD to 558,262 units, led by Germany (+42.8%), Belgium (+31.3%), and the Netherlands (+6.4%), though France declined -4.4%.
- Hybrid-electric vehicle registrations rose 20.8% YTD, reaching 1.29 million units (35.3% market share), with strong gains in France (+44.9%) and Spain (+35.8%).
- Plug-in hybrid registrations increased 7.8% YTD, with a 7.9% market share, boosted by Germany (+46.6%) and Spain (+42.8%).

EU new car registrations were down -0.2% YoY in March, the smallest decline so far this year. In Q1 2025, registrations were down -1.9% YoY.
- Total registrations across the EU, the EFTA, and the UK were up 2.8% YoY, and in Q1 2025, were down -0.4% YoY.
- March new registrations in the major EU economies: Germany (-3.9% YoY), France (-14.5% YoY), Italy (+6.3% YoY), Spain (+23.4% YoY)
- EV registrations were up 17.1% YoY (Q1 2025: 23.9% YoY) with large increases in hybrid registrations as well. Petrol registrations fell -20.7% YoY (Q1 2025: -20.6% YoY), diesel registrations down -25.5% YoY.

New EU car registrations were down -3.4% YoY in February, down from -2.6% YoY in January.
- The markets with the largest declines were Germany (-6.4% YoY) and Italy (-6.2% YoY).
- Spain was the only major market seeing an increase with registrations up 8.4% YoY in February.
- New BEV car registrations were up 23.7% YoY and up 19.0% YoY for hybrid-electric cars.
- Petrol car registrations were down -22.4% YoY, and diesel registrations were down -28.8% YoY.
- Up until February 2025, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 15.2% of total EU market share, signifying an increase from the low baseline of 11.5% in the comparable period of January-February 2024.

New car registrations in the EU were down by -2.6% YoY in January, the largest drop since September 2024.
- Most of the major markets saw declines, with France (-6.2% YoY), Italy (-5.8% YoY), and Germany (-2.8% YoY). Spain conversely recorded a 5.3% YoY increase.
- Petrol car registrations saw a significant decline of -18.9% YoY, with all major markets showing decreases. France experienced the steepest drop, with registrations plummeting by -28.2% YoY, followed by Germany (-23.7% YoY), Italy (-17% YoY), and Spain (-11.1% YoY).
- In January, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 15% of the market share, up from the low baseline of comparison of 10.9% in January 2024.
- Hybrid-electric vehicles surged ahead, commanding nearly 34.9% of the market and becoming again the first most preferred choice among EU car buyers.
- The combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 39.4% in January 2025, down from 48.7% one year ago.

EU new car registrations increased 5.1% YoY in December to 910,505, the fastest growth since April. The regional differences were varied significantly with Spain up 28.8% YoY, France up 1.5% YoY, and Germany and Italy both seeing sharp declines of -7.1% YoY and -4.9% YoY respectively. Battery EV sales declined -10.2% YoY due to weakness in Germany and France.

For the full year 2024, new car registrations rose slightly, increasing by 0.8% to around 10.6 million units. Spain continued to show resilience with a solid 7.1% growth rate. In contrast, declines were observed in France (-3.2%), Germany (-1%), and Italy, with a slight drop of 0.5%. Battery EV registrations were down -5.9% for the year and the total market share fell -1 ppt to 13.6%.

EU car registrations fell by -1.9% YoY in November with France and Italy showing sharp declines of -12.7% YoY and -10.8% YoY respectively. On a YTD basis, new car registrations were up just 0.4% MoM. The battery-electric car market share for November 2024 fell to 15% from 16.3% last year, while volumes dropped by -9.5% MoM.
