EU new car registrations edged down -0.1% YTD through August 2025, though battery-electric and hybrid-electric models continued to expand market share at the expense of petrol and diesel.
- Battery-electric registrations reached 1.13M units YTD (+15.8% share vs 12.6% in 2024), with strong growth in Germany (+39.2%), Belgium (+14.4%), and the Netherlands (+5.1%), while France declined -2% despite a +29.3% YoY rise in August.
- Hybrid-electric registrations climbed to 2.49M units YTD (+34.7% share), supported by gains in France (+30.5%), Spain (+29.3%), Germany (+10.1%), and Italy (+9.4%).
- Plug-in hybrid registrations rose to 631,783 units (+8.8% share vs 6.9% in 2024), driven by Spain (+99.9%), Germany (+61.2%), and Italy (+62.6%), marking six straight months of strong growth.
- August YoY registrations rose +30.2% for battery-electric, +14.1% for hybrid-electric, and +54.5% for plug-in hybrids, underscoring momentum in electrified vehicles.
- Petrol registrations fell -19.7% YTD (28.1% share vs 34.9%), with steep drops in France (-33.5%), Germany (-25.2%), Italy (-17.6%), and Spain (-13.1%).

EU new car registrations fell -0.7% YTD through July 2025 but rose +7.4% YoY in July, reflecting modest recovery amid structural shifts in fuel mix.
- Battery-electric cars reached 1.01M units YTD (+15.6% share, up from 12.5% in 2024), with strong gains in Germany (+38.4%), Belgium (+17.6%), and the Netherlands (+6.5%), while France declined -4.3%.
- Hybrid-electric registrations climbed to 2.26M units (+34.7% share), supported by growth in France (+30.5%), Spain (+30.2%), Germany (+10.7%), and Italy (+9.4%).
- Plug-in hybrid sales rose to 561,190 units (8.6% share vs 6.9% in 2024), with sharp increases in Spain (+94.5%), Germany (+59.2%), and Italy (+60.3%).
- July YoY gains were broad: battery-electric (+39.1%), hybrid-electric (+14.3%), and plug-in hybrids (+56.9%), marking the latter’s fifth straight month of strong growth.

EU new car registrations rose 1.3% YoY in April, but remained down -1.2% YoY for the year-to-date (YTD), with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) capturing a 15.3% YTD market share.
- BEV sales grew 26.4% YTD to 558,262 units, led by Germany (+42.8%), Belgium (+31.3%), and the Netherlands (+6.4%), though France declined -4.4%.
- Hybrid-electric vehicle registrations rose 20.8% YTD, reaching 1.29 million units (35.3% market share), with strong gains in France (+44.9%) and Spain (+35.8%).
- Plug-in hybrid registrations increased 7.8% YTD, with a 7.9% market share, boosted by Germany (+46.6%) and Spain (+42.8%).

EU new car registrations were down -0.2% YoY in March, the smallest decline so far this year. In Q1 2025, registrations were down -1.9% YoY.
- Total registrations across the EU, the EFTA, and the UK were up 2.8% YoY, and in Q1 2025, were down -0.4% YoY.

- EV registrations were up 17.1% YoY (Q1 2025: 23.9% YoY) with large increases in hybrid registrations as well. Petrol registrations fell -20.7% YoY (Q1 2025: -20.6% YoY), diesel registrations down -25.5% YoY.

- In January, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 15% of the market share, up from the low baseline of comparison of 10.9% in January 2024.
